Ex-Gopher Player To Allege Woman Gave Consent

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ― Lawyers for former Gopher football player Dominic Jones plan to argue that the woman he's accused of sexually assaulting gave her consent.

Attorney Earl Gray wrote in a letter to the judge that the defense will argue that any conduct was consensual and that Jones did not know that the woman was "asleep, helpless, or drunk."

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman tells the Star Tribune that prosecutors "totally disagree" with that defense. Freeman says it's "inconceivable" to suggest that a person as intoxicated as the woman allegedly was could consent to sexual activities.

Jones is scheduled to go on trial Monday. He was charged in July after an 18-year-old woman alleged that Jones and three other players got her drunk on vodka and then took turns having sex with her.

Only Jones was charged. Jones was kicked off the team but is still a student at the University of Minnesota.
