A Minneapolis man is charged with robbery after police say store employees and customers held him until officers arrived on scene.
Reginald Calhoun was arrested at the Family Dollar Store at 1010 East Lake Street in Minneapolis on Monday. Police say he took off after he robbed and assaulted a clerk. He didn't get far because customers and employees caught him before he tried to get away in a taxi.
Police say the taxi driver was not aware Calhoun was allegedly involved in the robberies.
Minneapolis Lt. Mike Fossum praised the citizens for their bravery.
"They did a great job. They are concerned citizens and they didn't like seeing the female get assaulted and the guy getting away," he said.
Fossum said Calhoun admitted he robbed the store and three others during a spree that began four days before he was finally arrested.
Calhoun was a fugitive wanted by the Minnesota Department of Corrections after he took off while on supervised released last June following a drug conviction.
"He said he was tired of being on the run. He knew about his warrant from the Department of Corrections. And he was going to turn himself in anyway. So I believe this was his last hurrah so he could go out and commit a bunch of robberies and smoke a lot of crack and then give up," said Fossum.
Calhoun has been charged with the Family Dollar Store robbery and also faces charges in the three earlier crimes that began with a hold up of a liquor store just across the street from the Minneapolis Police Department's 3rd Precinct station.
