The wife of a Minnesota sheriff's deputy who was shot in the head in February says he is battling meningitis in a Denver hospital.
Emily Dewey tells KFGO-AM that Mahnomen County Deputy Chris Dewey is able to laugh and speak, but still can't have long conversations.
She's hopeful that in a few days he can get out of intensive care and back to a long-term rehabilitation center in Denver.
She says that even though her family's life has been turned upside down, she's looking forward to the day when they can both come home.
The 26-year-old deputy was shot in the head and abdomen on Feb. 18 while investigating a suspected drunken driver. A nine-hour standoff ensued before the two suspects were arrested. Both face multiple felonies.

Mahnomen is about 250 miles northwest of the Twin Cities.
