Border Patrol Agent Wants Crash Case Moved

GRAND MARAIS, Minn. (AP) ― A U.S. Border Patrol agent charged in a fatal crash on the Gunflint Trail wants her case moved to federal court.

Maranda Weber was driving a Border Patrol vehicle when she's accused of striking and killing 67-year-old Kenneth Petersen as he was using a chain saw to clear a downed tree last Oct. 31.

Last month, a Cook County grand jury indicted Weber on misdemeanor charges of careless driving and inattentive driving.

Weber's attorney contends Weber was working for the federal government at the time of the crash, so her case should be heard in federal court. Her attorney also contends there is local hostility toward the Border Patrol.

County Attorney Timothy Scannell said he believes Weber can receive a fair trial in Cook County.
