Neighbor In Disbelief Over Craigslist Murder

SAVAGE, Minn. (WCCO) ― Charges are expected to be filed on Tuesday against a 19-year-old Savage man accused of murdering a Minneapolis woman.

P
olice say the suspect used a babysitting ad on Craigslist to connect with Katherine Ann Olson before killing her. Her body was found in the trunk of her car at Kraemer Nature Preserve in Burnsville on Friday.

O
n Monday, a neighbor of the suspect reacted to his arrest.

"He was a really nice kid. I swear to God he was very nice," said Brenda Von Bank. Von Bank lives two doors down from the 19-year-old suspect and his parents.

Three days after his arrest she is still finding it hard to believe the teen she watched grow up could commit murder.

"They always worked on their cars or worked on that mini go-cart. I never, ever see him get aggressive, mean to anybody. And I watched this kid grow up," said Von Bank.

Authorities are not releasing the suspect's name because he has not been formally charged. The Scott County Attorney's Office was expected to file charges Monday, but will now wait until Tuesday morning as they review the results of Olson's autopsy.

In the meantime, Von Bank is praying for Olson's family and for the suspect. She doesn't believe the 19-year-old, who was a former boy scout and loved to fish, could have committed such a heinous crime -- especially on his own.

"I don't really think he did it. I still think there's somebody else out there. But it will come out," said Von Bank.

Von Bank said her son would often go fishing with the suspect and she said their families got along really well.

The teen was arrested at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport late Friday night. Police said he had recently started a new job fueling planes at the airport. They stressed that he is their only suspect at this time.

Charges are expected to be filed before noon Tuesday.

Olson was a high school valedictorian who loved travel, theater and children. Funeral services will take place on Wednesday in Edina.
