Student Charged In Chemistry Mishap

ST. PAUL (AP) ― A University of Minnesota chemistry major is facing felony charges after his homemade firecracker exploded and blew off his left hand.

Seth Burton Holm has been charged with possession and negligent discharge of explosives after an ill-fated May 5 experiment at the home in New Brighton he shared with his brother.

The Ramsey County complaint says the 19-year-old wanted to show his friends how "some chemicals burned really bright like fireworks." New Brighton police responding to a call of a medical emergency found Holm in "severe distress" and missing most of his left hand.

Police who searched the home found numerous chemicals. They say Holm's brother told them that Holm ordered them off eBay.

Holm is recovering at his parents' home in Champlin. He told the St. Paul Pioneer Press he knew an accident was possible but "I was just too relaxed about it, I guess." He didn't know about the felony charges until the newspaper contacted him.
