Two people have been charged in a hit-and-run that killed a mother of two in Champlin early Sunday morning. Police said both were drunk.
According to the criminal charges filed in Hennepin County, 34-year-old Christopher Mark Beussman hit and killed Heather Solberg while she was walking across Highway 169.
She was on her way home from watching fireworks with friends when she was struck in the crosswalk at Hayden Lake Road.
According to the charges, Beussman struck Solberg while driving drunk. He then fled the scene because he knew he was intoxicated and was scared. Police would later administer a breathalyzer test that would measure 0.175 blood alcohol content.
Beussman admitted to police that he pulled over to switch spots with 23-year-old Ashley Marie Whitney, who would later register 0.195 blood alcohol content on a breathalyzer test.
Police were able to locate Beussman and Whitney about 20 minutes after the accident because there were witnesses in another car.
While in telephone communication with first responders, the witnesses followed the suspects as they drove at high speeds in an apparent attempt to elude them.
They eventually pulled up alongside and informed Beussman and Whitney they'd been involved in a crash and needed to return to the scene. Whitney then allegedly sped off.
When police caught up with the two, they noted blood and damage to the front of car, which Whitney said she had recently purchased.
Beussman admitted he had hit someone while driving the car and was driving while intoxicated. Whitney told police she did not remember any accident happening.
Beussman is charged with three felony counts of criminal vehicular homicide. Whitney is charged with felony aiding an offender and misdemeanor driving while impaired
