Car Slams Into Home, Inches From Children's Beds
RIVER FALLS, Wis. (WCCO) ―
A car slammed into a River Falls, Wis. residence early Wednesday morning, pushing the beds of two children up against a wall while they slept in them.
"My wife and I were sleeping and we heard an explosion," said Erik Mattson, who was jolted out of bed. Mattson rushed to the downstairs bedroom where his 8-year-old daughter, Kelly and her 5-month-old brother were sleeping.
"I came in and all I could see were headlights," said Mattson. "Thank God they're both still alive."
The car shoved both children's beds and rested just inches from their heads. Kelly and her brother went to the hospital but aside from a few scratches they're not hurt.
The man who crashed his car not only missed the children by just inches, he also just missed the gas meter for the Mattson's unit and the one next door.
"It could have been a lot worse. It could have been a lot worse," said Mattson.
Police arrested Christopher Huston of River Falls, Wis. for drinking and driving. Officers couldn't believe the crash didn't seriously hurt him or anyone else.
"It's fortunate that the driver wasn't hurt, and then, from our understanding, none of the occupants inside the residence were hurt and we didn't have any fire explosion. So I guess if you look at the good things, that was positive," said River Falls Police Chief Roger Legue.
Huston told police his brakes didn't work. It's not yet clear if he'll face charges beyond the drinking and driving.
