Police Suspect Mother In 10-Year-Old Boy's Murder

SOUTH ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) ― A 10-year-old boy was found murdered in his home in South St. Paul late Monday afternoon and the mother is suspected of killing him, according to police.

The South St. Paul Police Chief Daniel S. Vujovich said the investigation into the death of Michael Becht is focusing on the mother, 42-year-old Patricia Becht.

On Tuesday, a sunny summer day when children should be out playing, instead they quietly stopped by a memorial in front of the house where Michael died early Monday evening.

"Just processing everything that happened and letting him go through the process of grieving and just pay our respects," said mother and neighbor Nancy Alex.

As shocked friends mourned the loss of Michael, police spent the day trying to piece together how the boy died and how his 11-year-old sister Erica was left unconscious.

Neighbors said they did not see anything out of the ordinary at the home.

"The little boy would come over and ask if he could help me with stuff. He would come in and watch television with my girlfriend. Beautiful kids, you couldn't ask for better kids," said neighbor Marv Shuw.

By late Tuesday, police said the children's mother was the only suspect.

"It's kind of hard to imagine a 10-year-old not in your life as they're growing up through those important years. And unfortunately the other remaining family members are not going to be able to experience the joy and happiness that this 10-year-old can bring them," said Vujovich.

The police chief expects to release more details on the case on Wednesday. Police said no weapons were found at the scene.

Patricia Becht is currently in the hospital, as well as her 11-year-old daughter Erica. Both are expected to recover.

The Dakota County social services will be taking care of Erica and an older daughter who was not at the home when the incident occurred.
