Suspect In Blue Mounds Murder Wants Trial Moved

LUVERNE, Minn. (AP) ― Attorneys for the man accused of killing a state park worker in southwestern Minnesota almost seven years ago wants his trial moved.

Randy Swaney is charged with killing Carrie Nelson during a burglary at Blue Mounds State Park near Luverne in May 2001.

During a hearing, Swaney's defense argued that Luverne and the other communities in Rock County are close-knit, and that the amount of media coverage will make it hard to find jurors who can set aside their feelings.

Despite the media coverage, Assistant Attorney General Bill Klump says he believes a fair jury can be seated in Rock County.

Judge Timothy Connell says he'll rule on the change of venue -- as well as the type of evidence the state can introduce -- by the end of next week.

Swaney's trial is tentatively scheduled to begin on July 23.
