The attack on Todd and Barbara Bachman of Farmington has shocked and saddened many of their friends. A longtime neighbor of the Bachmans called them incredible people and a big part of the community. Those close to the family are still trying to make sense of what happened.
The Bachmans had been touring the ancient drum tower, a popular site in downtown Beijing. The attacker stabbed Todd Bachman to death and injured his wife Barbara and their tour guide. The man then jumped to his death off the second story of the tower. The couple's daughter Elisabeth Bachman was with them at the time, but was not hurt. Elisabeth "Wiz" Bachman was a member of the 2004 U.S. Olympic volleyball team. Her husband Hugh McCutheon is coach of the men's team.
"We have informed our men's indoor volleyball team as well as our women's team. The teams are as you might expect, very close, and they're shocked, they're shocked, they're deeply saddened and shocked. I know in this very difficult hour their thoughts and prayers are with everyone who's been impacted by this," said Darryl Seibel, U.S. Olympic Committee spokesman.
Todd Bachman was CEO of Bachman Garden Centers, the business his great grandfather started more than a century ago. Both Todd and Barbara Bachman were involved in Lakeville High Hchool athletics for years. Milan Mader, Elisabeth's high school volleyball coach, calls the family very supportive, encouraging ,and thankful. They stayed involved with Lakeville athletics even after their daughters graduated.
"We are all praying for Barbara's recovery," said Mader.
