Woman Sentenced For Nursing Home Abuse

(WCCO) A former nursing home aide from Montevideo was sentenced Thursday for three counts of disorderly conduct against vulnerable adults.

Maria Josephine Bjerke, 25, who pleaded guilty in April, received 365 days in prison and will be on supervised probation for two years. The judge said 290 of those days will not have to be served in prison unless she violates her probation.

Bjerke also received a staggered jail sentenced and is set to serve the first 15 days on June 30. She also received a $300 fine.

Bjerke is not allowed to work in any personal care jobs and she can't have exposure to a vulnerable person.

She must give an apology to the victims' families whether that's through victim mediation or an apology letter.

In her plea, Bjerke admitted wrongdoing against three residents of the Luther Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo from late 2006 to mid-2008.

Among other things, the complaint alleged sexual humiliation of one man, laughing and screaming at residents and hurting a resident by poking into a cancerous wound.
