A St. Paul man has been charged with unintentional second-degree murder in the death of his wife Thursday.
According to the criminal complaint, Gerald Wassenaar, 67, was found by police in a confused state of mind in his stalled car next to Lake Elmo on the night of Nov. 2. When police drove him home, he refused to enter his house.
Later that night, St. Paul police were called to the house and discovered the body of Gerald's wife, 67-year-old Jean Wassenaar. Gerald was taken to Regions Hospital and placed on a mental health hold.
A medical examiner's report stated that Jean's death was a homicide and that she received extensive traumatic injuries in her neck.
No date has been set for his first appearance on the charge in Ramsey County District Court.
