Anoka Co. Judge Pleads In Tax Case

HASTINGS, Minn. (AP) ― An Anoka County judge has pleaded guilty to four misdemeanor counts of failing to file a tax return.

Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom said Monday that Donald James Venne failed to file state tax returns from 2003 to 2006. Venne submitted tax payments for the next three years but without supporting reports or extension requests.

Backstrom said the investigation showed a remaining liability of $3,179. The prosecutor said Venne has since paid off his tax liability. Venne was put on two years probation and fined $900 for each misdemanor.

Venne's attorney, Doug Kelley, told the Star Tribune of Minneapolis that the judge was overwhelmed with a family emergency in 2002. The 61-year-old judge has been on medical leave, and Kelley said he didn't expect him to return to the bench.
