Thanksgiving Meal Test: Price Comparisons By Store

(WCCO) Concerned about what the rising cost of groceries is going to do to your Thanksgiving dinner this year?

No need to worry. The price of turkey is still one of the greatest values going.

WCCO-TV puts the price to the test and we let you know what it will cost to have someone do all the cooking for you!

Before you fork over the potatoes and turkey, have you ever considered how much you're forking out for your traditional spread?

The 23rd annual Farm Bureau survey said this year's Thanksgiving Day meal will cost the average American family $44.61 -- up a little over two cents from last year.

They price a 16 pound turkey, stuffing, dinner rolls, pumpkin pie, sweet potatoes, green beans, relish tray and cranberries -- enough to feed a family of 10.

We put it to the test at the Rainbow in Lakeville, Minn. With shopping list in hand, we grabbed the turkey and all the trimmings, stuffing, spuds, beans, cranberries, veggies and bread.

Finally, the pumpkin pie filling and frozen crust, some milk and cream.

The pleasant surprise came at the checkout counter. We came in under the Farm Bureau survey by $14. The Thanksgiving meal came to a total of $30.32.

If the thought of cooking the meal isn't doing it for you, don't worry, the grocery stores will do that for you too. Just place the order, pick it up and pop it into the oven to reheat.

Cub supplies a 10-12 pound bird, mashed potatoes, buttered corn, stuffing, gravy, dinner rolls and cranberry relish for $54.88.

At Rainbow, $53.99 gets you the turkey for 10 guests, as well as green been casserole, potatoes, stuffing and gravy.

Lunds/Byerly's is offering it's turkey day spread for 8 to 10 people at $99.99. It comes with a bit more, including mashed and sweet potatoes and a sage dressing.

Kowalski's will cost more at $119.95, but you get more. Besides the 12 pound turkey, you get sage dressing, sweet potatoes, green been casserole, dinner rolls, cranberry relish and two pumpkin pies.

All stores offering the full meals said order early, meaning by this weekend.

Also, they offer other side dishes to better tailor the meal to your liking and you can add all the pies you want for a little extra cost!
