6 E.Coli Cases In MN May Be Linked To Cookie Dough

(WCCO) State heath officials are investigating six cases of E. coli in Minnesota that may be linked with eating raw cookie dough.

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) said the illnesses were all caused by E. coli O157:H7 and had the same DNA fingerprint.

The MDH said each person got sick between May 3 and June 11, and all six reported eating raw cookie dough of the Nestle's Toll House brand.

Those that got sick in Minnesota range from 2 to 18 years old. Five out of six were female.

Only one of the six cases were hospitalized and all have since recovered.

The FDA said there have been 66 reports of illness across 28 states since March. About 25 people have been hospitalized, but no one has died.

On Friday, Nestle USA voluntarily recalled its Toll House refrigerated cookie dough products.

The FDA advised consumers to throw away any prepackaged, refrigerated Nestle Toll House cookie dough products in their homes. Retailers, restaurateurs and employees at other food-service operations should also not sell or serve any of the products.

It has not yet been determined how the E. coli bacteria got into the cookie dough, but the FDA is working with the Nestle company to answer that question.
