Group Encourages Buying Holiday Gifts Locally

Retail sales this holiday season are expected to be weaker than last year so on Sunday night, a group of local artists got together to showcase the importance of helping the local economy.
The Grand Hand Gallery in St. Paul showcases products from about 100 Twin Cities artists. There's everything from iron work to glassware to clothing.
A public policy think tank group called Minnesota 2020 said buying Minnesota-made products ensures that as much as 68 cents of every $1 stays right here in our state.
"If just 25 percent of the holiday gifts that are purchased this season are purchased from local stores with local goods, we would infuse hundreds of millions of dollars back into our local economy," said Matt Entenza, with Minnesota 2020.
Researcher Lee Egerstrom said buying things from big-box stores not based in Minnesota drops the amount that stays in Minnesota to 43 cents on every dollar.
