Food To Fireworks: Paying More This 4th Of July

(WCCO) Thousands of Minnesota families are thinking about what to pack and buy before heading out of town for the Fourth of July. This year the celebration will likely be more expensive. Everything from food to fireworks, and of course travel, will cost more.

Fireworks cost an average 30 percent more this year. You can blame that on fuel costs, rising international demand and an explosion at a Chinese fireworks plant are to blame.

Last year at Phantom Fireworks in Roberts, Wis. Henry Hicks of St. Paul spent more than $100. This year he'll only spend $60.

The mangers of Phantom Fireworks are concerned about consumers feeling pinched with higher fuel and food costs, and are offering special coupons. One offer is bring in a gas receipt, spend $150 and get a $55 items for free.

If you are traveling this Fourth of July, AAA said you should also look for coupons and freebies.

"Look for the free breakfast at the hotels, the gas cards for a minimum number of night stays, any sort of percent discounts they can find on the Web sites," said Gail Weinholzer of AAA Minnesota.

AAA says because of stiff gas prices 600,000 fewer Americans will be driving this holiday weekend, and that means deals for those who do hit the road.

As for those holiday barbecue staples, those burger and hot dog buns will cost 20 percent more than last year. The sliced cheese is up 12 percent, the potato chips are up 20 percent and the fruit salad costs 26 percent more than last year.

There is some good news for the barbecue. Ground beef, especially the fattier kinds, cost just about the same as last year, and beer, the beverage of choice for so many, costs just about the same as last year.
