Something Is New At The Farmers Market --The Price

(WCCO) The Farmers Market is a Minneapolis tradition with flowers, food, and sun every Thursday on the Nicollet Mall. This year, however, there's something different -- the prices.

"We have prices all across the board," said Greg Ketchum of Market Flowers, "but I'd say whatever price point it was, it's gone up about a dollar."

Sales are still brisk, though. At $6 a bunch for flowers, folks are willing to live with a little increase.

"I think they're about $8 or $9 at Target," said Inessa Tarhan of Lakeville, "so still fairly reasonable."

Down the street, they have the same problem at Kevin Yang's fruit stand.

"Gas prices, bad economy," he said, "don't ask me, I'm not the smart guy."

With produce coming from California and Florida, and gas prices going through the roof, Yang said he is not charging more -- he's selling less fruit for the same price.

"Eight bananas for $2 last year," he said, "this year, five bananas."

Still, his sales are strong and his customers are loyal.

"Everywhere else, you don't change prices, you just change the size of things," said Jan Dahlen of Minnetonka Beach. "Companies have been doing that for years."

And if you're really looking for a deal, you can still find one bargain.

"Apples are still almost the same price," according to Yang.
