A digital television (DTV) converter box from Dish Networks,
featuring analog pass-through, is now available to consumers.
The TR-40 features an auto-tune timer for programming VCR
recording as well as analog pass-through, which gives consumers the ability to change
from digital to analog channels seamlessly.
The box will be sold for $40.
However, with a government issued $40 coupon
the box is essentially free, besides shipping and handling costs.
Only people who own analog televisions and receive their
broadcasts using 'rabbit ears' or some other antenna means will need to use DTV
boxes.
The 'Digital Transition' is set to occur on Feb. 17,
2009.
The transition involves most
broadcast stations switching from an analog signal to a superior digital signal.
