Thousands in the North Metro are still cleaning up after a busy summer storm season. A hail storm and a tornado touch down were reported in Coon Rapids in June and people have been hiring contractors ever since to fix the damage.
That move can be costly to homeowners if they're not careful. One woman learned that the hard way.
When the clouds moved in to Coon Rapids in August 2007 they settled over a blue rambler on Crocus Street.
Debbie Blesi's belongings are still in boxes all because she needed a new roof.
"He tore off the back part of the roof and tarped it that night. Well. that night it rained and unfortunately it rained inside my house," Blesi said.
Her hardwood floors were ruined, so were ceilings and walls.
An acquaintance recommended the guy who did Blesi's roof job. It turns out he doesn't have a license or a working phone number.
Coon Rapids has seen the problem weekly in the wake of a busy summer rebuild. Doug Whitney works in the city's building inspection office.
"The biggest thing is people think they're going to save money by hiring the contractor and getting the permit themselves and they get into it and they're way over their head," Whitney said.
Blesi now has a licensed contractor finishing the work more than a year later.
The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry makes it easy to check out contractors. For more information on checking out contractors click on the link below.
