Bacon Fast-Gaining In Greasy, Delicious Popularity

(WCCO) More than 300,000 people have taken a bite out of a popular bacon sausage recipe making the rounds on the web, and that's just the tip of the strip -- bacon is hot right now.

Who knew the State Fair was actually ahead of a trend. Chocolate covered bacon was a big hit this year at the fair, and now it seems like bacon bits are everywhere.

There are bacon blogs and Web sites. The Patina gift shop even has its own bacon area, with things like bacon toothpicks, floss, wallets and even a bacon chocolate bar.

"People just kind of go crazy for it, they laugh about it, they give it to people as gag gifts and they just love it," said  Gwendolyn Westberg, a merchandiser for Patina.

"All foods are made better by the addition of bacon. That's just what happens," said Andrew Zimmern, a chef and food critic.

Zimmern hosts Bizarre Foods for the Travel Channel. He says to a chef, bacon is the perfect ingredient.

"Fat is flavor to chefs. We get tons of flavor from it. Brown is the color of flavor. And bacon is fatty and brown," said Zimmern.

One thing's clear, bacon is not just for breakfast anymore. There's even a bar with a "bacon night."

"Some of my friends think it's a really weird kind of thing, and other people just absolutely love bacon and think it's crazy and come and join me," said one bacon lover.

On Wednesday nights, at the Triple Rock Social Club, the baskets are full of bacon and the bar is full of patrons.

They even have bacon topped cupcakes for this popular promotion.

"Some people knit, some people play poker, and some people drink beer and eat bacon as their hobby. So who am I to judge them," said Kermit Carter, the day manager at Triple Rock Social Club.

"Bacon is salty, and it makes people thirsty, so it's a great product for us," said Erik Funk the owner of Triple Rock Social Club.

The bacon recipe that's been the buzz of the Internet even became a story in the New York Times. You can get it on Esme's blog by clicking here.
