Free Annual Credit Report

VIDEO: Terri Gruca reports.

Minneapolis (WCCO) ― Most people do not pay attention to what is in their credit report, until they make a big purchase or they are denied.

Now, with changing technology and the rising threat of identity theft, people should pay attention. Starting March 1, checking credit reports will get much easier in Minnesota.

Chris Farrell hosts a weekly radio show about money and he said debt is one of the biggest worries he hears about on his show.

Farrell said everyone should take advantage of a new Web site set up by the government, where consumers can get a free copy of their credit report every year, from each of the three big credit agencies.

"Up front, go ahead, get all three," Farrell advises. "Take a look at them. If you do see any mistakes, if you go to the Web, every single one of these has very clear instructions for what you do."

Be careful on the Web, though. Other Web sites and pop-up ads look similar and promise the same free credit reports, but don't deliver. Some charge fees and others may be run by scam artists, looking to steal your personal information.

"You are always going to initiate this transaction," said Farrell. "You will never ever accept any solicitation from anyone."

It's a quick check that could save you.
