United Unions Talking Tough About Merger
CHICAGO (AP) ―
United Airlines' unions are stepping up their hard-line talk about a possible merger and warning that management will have to pay a steep price to win their support.
The latest tough talk came this week when the mechanics' union declared that United won't merge with another carrier unless the coalition of United unions says so. Spokesman Joseph Prisco says the airline's unions have their "war paint" on over the conditions surrounding a possible deal.
The militant stance won't necessarily thwart Chicago-based United's hopes of a deal. But it foreshadows the likelihood of tough, costly labor negotiations.
A source familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press today that United continues to hold talks with Continental about a possible combination. The two airlines are waiting for a likely Delta-Northwest deal first.
