More than two-thirds of the sit-down restaurants in the Duluth area have been cited for at least one "critical" health violation over a yearlong period.
The Duluth News Tribune looked at 105 restaurants in Duluth, Proctor and Hermantown that were inspected and found that 71 of them had a critical violation.
Problems included slimy soda guns, employees not washing their hands before working with food and food being left at temperatures that could harbor bacteria.
The newspaper did the same analysis a year earlier and found similar results.
Only six restaurants avoided critical violations two years in a row, but some of those had non-critical violations such as metallic flakes coming off an ice cream scoop and loose ceiling paint.
Donna O'Connor, the St. Louis County environmental health supervisor, says despite the problems, no restaurants have been bad enough to be closed down.
