Facebook's Nudity Rule Irks Breastfeeding Moms
DALLAS (CBS) ―
A group of women who spoke with CBS station KTVT-TV said they are
outraged that they can't share breastfeeding photos on their
Facebook pages.
They are so outraged, in fact, that they are protesting Facebook online. The women are taking part in an activity called virtual "nurse in's."
The "nurse in's" was organized by a group called called Mothers International Lactation Campaign, which urged Facebook members to change their profile images to breastfeeding images on Dec. 27, 2008. It also planned in-person events that day.
Thousands of Facebook users participated, KTVT-TV reported. In addition, the Facebook group "Hey Facebook, breastfeeding is not obscene!" now has more than 90,000 members.
Facebook user Alison Grady has posted breastfeeding pictures. She said refuses to take them down.
"I really cherish the moments that I have with my children when they are nursing, Grady explained. "I wanted to have some photographs of it, so I could remember. It's just so sweet when they gaze up in your eyes and you get to know them and their personalities."
Mother Vicky Suarez said, "I can't believe Facebook can't tell the difference, or thinks that other people can't tell the difference, between a sexual photo and a nursing photo. A nursing photo is a family oriented photo of a mom nurturing a baby. These other photos are something else. They are not the same."
A Facebook spokesperson told KTVT-TV that they do not remove all breastfeeding pictures from the website, only the ones that break certain rules.
In a statement a spokesperson wrote, "Photos containing a fully exposed breast (as defined by showing the nipple or areola) do violate those terms and may be removed."
The statement went on to say the policies are designed to ensure Facebook remains a safe, secure and trusted environment for all users, including the many children who use the site.
Officials with Facebook also pointed out that the photos were brought to their attention by other users.
