Airline Union Says It Would Oppose Mergers

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ― The union that represents baggage handlers and ticket agents at Northwest Airlines Corp. and other airlines said it will oppose any merger.

The International Association of Machinists says airline mergers hurt workers and passengers. The union also represents workers at United Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and other carriers.

Pilot unions at Northwest and Delta Air Lines Inc. have been in talks to work out their differences in advance of a possible merger. But the IAM does not represent workers at Delta.
