Duluth Aquarium Attendance Stops Sinking

Duluth, Minn. (AP) ― The embattled Great Lakes Aquarium in Duluth had another strong month after a new exhibit brought in the crowds.

Attendance is up 11.6 percent in July -- to 26,123 paying customers -- and director Chad Netherland attributed those gains to "The Abyss," the aquarium's new saltwater exhibit, and stepped-up marketing.

"We had nothing like this last year," he said.

The July attendance increases come on the heels of a 12.5 gain in June. The Abyss opened on June 2. It's the first in a series of exhibits planned at two-year intervals and designed to boost attendance at the aquarium, which has been mired in financial troubles that have drained millions of dollars from the city of Duluth.

The aquarium aggressively marketed "The Abyss," sending its decorated van to popular Duluth locations as well as the Science Museum in St. Paul.
