FORT WORTH, Texas (CBS) ― American Airlines voluntarily canceled roughly 200 flights on Wednesday morning. This action came after the increase of Federal Aviation Administration audits regarding airplane maintenance records.

In a statement issued early Wednesday morning, American Airlines spokesman Tim Wagner said, "During the audit of American Airlines, a joint team of AA and FAA inspectors raised questions regarding an already accomplished directive concerning how a certain bundle of wires is secured to the MD-80 aircraft. We are re-inspecting the MD-80s to make sure the wiring is installed and secured exactly according to the directive."

American Airlines explained that the inspection process takes several hours to complete for each individual aircraft, leading to the widespread cancellations, reported CBS station KTVT-TV in Dallas.

Less than 10 percent of flights at Chicago O'Hare AirportĀ have been canceled, as well as about 30 flights coming into DFW Airport.

The company also noted that this is the final round of FAA inspections. Other plans already in service have completed the inspection process.

Planes being inspected on Wednesday will return to service throughout the day.
