Engineer: Rapid Rebuild No Threat To Safety

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ― The rapid replacement of the Minneapolis freeway bridge has caused some people to wonder about its safety. The builders say there's no reason to worry.

Project manager Peter Sanderson says the new bridge can support a lot more weight than the old one. He says it's even strong enough to support fully loaded semitrailers parked bumper-to-bumper on all seven lanes of traffic.

And the builders say there have been multiple layers of inspection and outside evaluation all through the process.

The new bridge also has technology that will measure stresses, movement and general aging over its 100-year life expectancy.

The new bridge will take about 11 month to complete, less than half the normal time for a project of its size. It's targeted to open next month.
