Basilica Holds Memorial Service For Bridge Victims
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ―
Hundreds of people gathered for a special prayer service at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis Friday morning. The service was about people of different political and religious backgrounds coming together to remember that tragic day.
"We are here to support our daughter. She was on the bridge when it collapsed. For her, I think it represents a day of healing," said Jack Paden.
The interfaith service featured Buddhist, Greek Orthodox, Jewish, Muslim and Hindu prayers. The congregation also sang a Catholic song. As many as eight different faiths were represented.
"It was uplifting in many ways, I think. To feel so much of the community come together and to leave here with a feeling of hope," said Kris Nebel.
For some, healing has not come easily. Ruth Block's daughter survived the bridge collapse but is having a hard time putting that day behind her.
"She is still going through a lot of emotional stuff, but we're survivors," said Block.
For others, the service helped them move forward.
"I really, honestly, truly can't believe it's been a year," said Justina Hausmann.
Hausmann lost her father Peter in the 35W bridge collapse. She said the memorial service is a reminder that her father is still with her in spirit.
"Even without him being physically here, how strong you can be. He can help me now more than he ever could before now that he is up there with God," said Hausmann.
