Fund For Bridge Victims Passes 1st Committee

ST. PAUL (AP) ― A compensation fund for the victims of the Interstate 35W bridge collapse is moving through the legislative process.

Rep. Ryan Winkler's bill cleared its first panel on Thursday morning, passing the House Governmental Operations Committee on an unanimous voice vote.

The hearing also provided the most robust debate on the compensation plan since it was first proposed after the Aug. 1 disaster that killed 13 and injured 145.

With survivors in the hearing room, several minority Republicans questioned whether similar aid should be offered to those hurt in tornadoes and other disasters.

An amendment to compensate bridge victims only for their uncovered medical costs failed. Another change succeeded -- it would prevent attorneys from charging bridge victims for helping them access a state compensation fund.
