Bridge Collapse Anniversary To Pass Quietly

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ― The second anniversary of the Interstate 35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis will pass without a public ceremony.

A spokesman for Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak said Monday that no public event is planned for this Aug. 1, which falls on Saturday.

Jeremy Hanson said relatives of collapse victims and others tied to the tragedy indicated a desire to move on with their lives.

The collapse of the 40-year-old bridge spanning the Mississippi River killed 13 people and injured 145.

A year ago, prominent Minnesota politicians joined hundreds of people near the site to reflect on the disaster. A new bridge opened to traffic the next month.

A monument is planned, but efforts to raise $1 million for construction and upkeep have moved slowly.
