Crews Say I-35W Bridge May Be Done In Days

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ― Construction crews working on the new Interstate 35W bridge said Saturday that the bridge could be completed even earlier than expected.

Flatiron Construction officials say the bridge could be complete in as early as 10 days and that workers are putting the final touches on the new bridge.

If the bridge is completed by Sept. 16, it would be more than 100 days ahead of schedule. The contractors could earn a bonus of up to $27 million if the bridge opens by September 15.

Just because the bridge is finished, Minnesota Department of Transportation officials caution that it doesn't mean the bridge will open right away.

Officials said they should know the status of the bridge by early next week.

The original I-35W bridge over the Mississippi River opened in November 1967 and was 1,907 feet in length. The replacement bridge opened in September 2008 and measures 1,216 feet in length.
