Maya Nishikawa
Maya Nishikawa has been with WCCO-TV since April 2002 and has spent most of her time on the morning news, but now works weekends. Maya also worked in California, Missouri and Alabama as a reporter and anchor.
Maya grew up in the Los Angeles area and went to college at U.C. Berkeley. She enjoys the outdoors, including snow skiing, golfing, rollerblading and scuba diving.
While living in San Diego, she began learning Spanish and enjoys speaking and learning more about the language.
Maya has been invovled with the Asian American Journalists Association since she was in college. The group offers support for journalists and students and promotes accurate coverage of Asian Pacific American issues in the news.
Maya is also a member of the St. Paul Special Education Advisory Council, a group of parents and educators who help make sure the needs of children with disabilities are adequately addressed in St. Paul Public Schools.
Maya and her husband have a baby girl named Mieko. She has a genetic disorder called Trisomy 18.
"I spend time connecting with other parents dealing with similar disabilities and offer support and advice when I can," Maya says.
Maya enjoys the diversity of the Twin Cities. As the daughter of an immigrant, she can identify with newcomers striving for the American dream. She admires their hard work, resiliency and sense of adventure.
