Reporters

Lisa Kiava

The first Saturday of May holds a special place in Lisa Kiava's heart. Horseracing fans know that's Kentucky Derby Day.

Working at a television station in Louisville, Ky. for several years, Lisa reported on "the most exciting two minutes in sports." She has seen the race from every imaginable viewpoint over the years -- from the famed Millionaire's Row to the Winner's Circle.

"That's the best part of being a news reporter. You get a front row seat to exciting events and history," Lisa said. "But there are definitely times when no one envies reporters—like those winter days when we're outside for hours."

Lisa Kiava joined WCCO-TV as a reporter in 2002 and she said what she enjoys most is the variety of her assignments.

Variety is something Lisa has always sought out in her career. She has reported and anchored at television stations in Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky and California

During the Internet start-up boom, Lisa took a detour from television and joined an online technology magazine. She served as the editor-in-chief for TechRepublic, a CNET publication for IT professionals.

Lisa credits an unusual string of part-time jobs for preparing her for her current career. During her college years, she worked at a billiards hall. Another part-time stint was at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, where she cooked breakfast for Catholic priests.

Lisa attended St. Thomas for a time and then graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a degree in journalism.

Lisa's family is proud of its Minnesota roots. In  the1890's, her great-grandfather emigrated from Poland to Minnesota where he became a dock worker in Duluth. Lisa's paternal grandfather worked in a paper mill in Cloquet and her grandmother was a survivor of the 1918 Cloquet-Moose Lake fire. A family member still runs the farm in Moose Lake.

If she had free time, Lisa would enjoy golfing and traveling. But these days, Lisa and her husband are too busy chasing after their son -- a very energetic toddler.
